OVERVIEW

When the Shah’s approached Design Basics to design their 43rd floor apartment in Lodha Bellissimo, their primary brief was to have a space that wasn’t too garish. The home had to be clean and maintenance free. Rohit Ghuste, Principal Designer, Design Basics, says, “The client was not a huge fan of veneer and teakwood, so we decided to play with colours and use more of PU paint rather than veneer polish.” Once the theme was finalised, Ghuste, along with the client, took a short trip to China to source most of the furniture and lighting fixtures.

Occupying an area of 205 square meters, in the sprawling city of Mumbai, Ocean Chemicals needed a design that would comprehensively include all the necessary office spaces whilst looking spacious; this provided a unique challenge for the designers. The solution was an open plan that followed the philosophy of ‘less is more’. To inculcate a sense of space, all the primary walls were replaced by glass partitions that lend fluidity to the interiors along with better visual connectivity. The L- shaped plan is entered via a reception featuring an array of elements intelligently woven together to give it a chic look. The reception further opens into a passage with the staff tables to the left. In general, the planning is such that staff area occupies the periphery while the executive space is towards the interiors. A pantry cum cafeteria is incorporated into the plan near the washrooms with a storeroom situated adjacent to it. Locker room and storage rooms are also provided. The plan is a study in strong, straight lines and an intuitive use of colours that complement the materials used. A controlled use of yellow/mustard, added to the monochromatic colour palette, gives the interiors a suave and refined feel.
